Remediation of a former dye manufacturing factory, Manchester

FLI QDS were contracted to provide the remediation of chlorinated solvent impacted soils, groundwater (shallow and deep), and an adjacent river bed. The sensitive site was particularly challenging as it was located within the grounds of an operational office block.

Remediation works were required to address controlled waters risk. Contaminant impact was identified through the Made Ground (1.5m thick), underlying silty clay (4.5m thick), sands

and gravels (14m thick) to the sandstone bedrock below. The key contaminants of concern were trichlorobenzene (TCB) and dichlorobenzene (DCB).

This was the first application of large-scale surfactant flushing undertaken in the UK. It allowed the successful recovery of contaminants from a circa 14m thick aquifer within a relatively short space of time, where other more conventional technologies would have failed or taken too long. We recovered a total of 1.7 tonnes of trichlorobenzene (TCB) and 0.9 tonnes of dichlorobenzene (DCB) within just four months. We provided daily toolbox talks, presentations on common high-risk activities and encouraged operatives to undertake dynamic risk assessments. These activities addressed key hazards, such as working on and adjacent to a water course, moving plant and the injection of solutions at high pressure.
