QDS is a very professional company to work with. They remediated a difficult site with great skill to a high standard, on time and on budget and I would not hesitate to use them again or recommend to others.

Shortlisted for Best Young Brownfield Professional

Ellie Cotterill talks about her experience as an Environmental Scientist and being shortlisted for best young brownfield professional for the Brownfield Briefing awards 2018.

Q. When did you first join FLI-QDS and what skills/ experience have you learnt in the time you have been with them?

A. I joined FLI-QDS as my first job since leaving University back in 2014. It was a steep learning curve, arriving on a busy site for my first day, but I got stuck in straight away! And with the help of the amazing FLI-QDS team, I quickly fitted in and started to develop my skills. Throughout the four years working for FLI-QDS, I have developed my skills from site monitoring and sample taking, to site management, client comminutions, data interpretation, people management, report writing (to name a few!) and I’m currently working towards developing my skills in project management.

Q. Who nominated you for best young brownfield professional? And how did you feel being nominated?

A. I was nominated by Jamie Harris – Operations Director for FLI-QDS. Jamie has been an invaluable support to me throughout my time with QDS and it was lovely to be nominated by someone who I respect and have learnt so much from.

Q. What makes you proud to work for FLI-QDS?

A. My colleagues within FLI-QDS work as an enthusiastic and dedicated team, always striving to provide the best possible service on each project and I am proud to be a part of that team. I enjoy coming to work each day and helping to deliver remediation to highest possible standards whilst working closely with clients. I enjoy representing FLI-QDS at various award ceremonies and I’m always happy to promote the work we undertake with genuine enthusiasm.

Q. What do you find most difficult when working on a project? And how do you help to resolve these problems?

A. The thing I find most difficult whilst working on a project is dealing with the unexpected issues, such as machine breakdowns or unanticipated ground conditions. However, I also find these situations the most exciting, and love the challenge of working around them, thinking on my feet and applying my knowledge and experience to make the decisions to ensure the job continues to run as planned, and deliver the project on time, in a safe and thorough manor.

Q. How did you feel when you found out you had been shortlisted for the ‘Best Young Brownfield Professional' ?

A. To be honest, I was very surprised when I was told I was shortlisted for the Best Young Brownfield Professional Award, as I know so many talented young professionals are nominated for the award every year, but I was very proud to have been considered for the award alongside them.

Q. What has been your best achievement since working for FLI-QDS?

A. I feel like my best achievement since working for FLI-QDS has been establishing myself as an integral part of the QDS team and constantly proving to myself that I am capable of more than I originally thought.

Q. What do you like to do, when you are not at work?

A. When I’m not at work, I will pretty much always be climbing. I climb almost every day, either at the climbing wall, or outside at my local Peak District crags, or at various places near my sites, often training for climbing trips abroad. I have even persuaded some FLI staff to join me!

Q. What career aspirations do you have for the future whilst working for FLI-QDS?

A. For the future I would like to continue to develop my skills in project management, and one day move to junior project management, however, I am enjoying my current role and always learning new skills and techniques. I am also starting to work towards becoming Chartered, which will be very exciting.
